Stanisław Wyspiański’s "The Wedding", although written more than a hundred years ago, continues to astonish with the relevance of the diagnoses that Poland’s “fourth national bard” made of the national community. It is, after all, an enduring story of the dream of solidarity colliding with an inability to act together. A story of a divided reality, haunted time and again by the shadows carried on the winds of history.
In the wedding cottage, worlds come together that, if only for a moment, try to become one: the intelligentsia and the peasantry, dream and reality, past and present, memory and oblivion. Today, when thinking in terms of borders and conflicts has become part of everyday life not only in Poland but across the world, are we still able to hear what the unexpected guests who arrive that evening have to say?
Justyna Łagowska’s staging asks whether we are capable of recognising history as it unfolds here and now. And if we are - what will we do about it?
